Your Drive Fills Up Faster Than You Think
If you have been on Usenet for any length of time you already know how this goes. You set up a provider, you find the groups you want, and for the first few months everything is fine. The third is access. A drive in your house is only useful when you are in your house, sitting at that machine. Say you want to watch something on a tablet in another room, or on a laptop while you are travelling. A drive in a desktop tower does not help you.
Cloud storage fixes the second and third problems, and it fixes the first one as a side effect. That is the whole pitch. It is not more exciting than that.

One thing worth saying plainly, because it catches people out. Cloud storage is not the same as your Usenet provider’s storage. Your provider holds the articles on their servers and you download from them. That is retention and it is included in what you already pay. Encryption And Why It Matters Here

The practical setup is not complicated. Your newsreader downloads to a folder on your machine the way it always has. You install the pCloud desktop app and it gives you a drive letter. Then you either point your newsreader’s completed folder at it, or move things across when you are done with them.

What It Will Not Do
Being straight about the limits, because we would rather you not buy something that does not do what you wanted.
It will not make your downloads faster. Your speed comes from your provider and your connection, and storage has nothing to do with it. If speed is the problem you need to look at your provider’s connection count, not at where the files land.
It will not replace a real backup strategy if you are serious about it. Cloud storage is one copy in one place. If that copy is your only copy, you are still exposed, just to a different failure than a dead drive.
And the upload takes a while the first time. If you are moving an existing collection up there, that first sync can run for days depending on your connection. It is a one time cost but it is not instant, and people are always surprised by it.
What About The Alternatives

Backblaze is the name most people bring up, and it is genuinely good, but it is a different product. It is a backup service, which means it mirrors what is already on your drives.
