The one thing which is common among all great nations is that they value their workers and that’s the very reason why America celebrates “Labor Day” each year to honor the American Workers. It was and is the American workers who played a critical role in making America a great nation, and that’s why every year, the whole nation pays tribute to our worker. So, if you are interested in knowing the history of Labor Day and wondering how it started, keep reading because we will tell you everything you need to know about Labor Day. Let’s get started.

What is Labor Day?

As the name suggests, Labor Day is the day when we pay tribute to our American Workers. It’s the designated day when the whole nation appreciates the American workers for all of their hard work and efforts. Just like the 4th of July, Mother Day, and other designated days, Labor Day is also celebrated once a year with a lot of events and sales.

Why do we celebrate Labor Day?

Labor Day Everything You Need to Know

The sole purpose of Labor Day is to pay tribute to our American workers and appreciate them for all the hard work they put in every day. Since the inception of Labor Day, the idea was pretty the same.

The work done by American workers during the industrial revolution played an important role in becoming what America is today. They helped us build the infrastructure such as railways, dams, ships, battleships, roads, bridges, which helped America in the journey to becoming the Global Power. So, when the industrial revolution was at the peak, the Labor Unions decided to celebrate the “Labor Day” to honor workers across the US.

History of Labor Day – How it all started?

Let’s start with the History of Labor Day and how it all started and became a designated holiday. When it came to Day when Labor Day was celebrated, there is no debate, and it is a well-documented fact that the first Labor Day was celebrated on September 5th of 1882.

Labor Day Everything You Need to Know

However, when it comes to the founder of Labor Day, there are two opinions available. According to the first opinion, the person who first proposed the idea of Labor Day was Peter J. McGuire, who was the General Secretary of the Brother of Carpenters and Jointers. He was also the co-founder of the American Federation of Labor. According to records, he proposed that there should be a dedicated day to honor those (Labors) “who from rude nature have delved and carved all the grandeur we behold.”

According to the second opinion, it was “Matthew Maguire,” who first proposed the idea of Labor Day while serving as the Secretary of the Central Labor Union of New York.

Now it’s not clear which gentleman is the true founder of Labor Day, but it’s clear that “Central Labor Union” adopted the idea of Labor Day, and they devised a committee to plan the activities for this big day. After the preparations, the first Labor Day was celebrated in New York City on September 5th, 1882.

Later on, the union celebrated Labor Day on September 5th, 1883 as well. As the Labor Day became more popular, people around America started celebrating Labor Day. Later on, the local governments also recognized Labor Day when they passed the municipal Ordinances in 1885 and 1886.

Following the lead, Oregon became the first state which recognized Labor Day and passed the Law on February 21st, 1887. During the same year, Colorado, New Jersey, New York, and Massachusetts also passed the laws to recognize Labor Day with legislative acts.

In the next 7 years, a total of 23 US States recognized Labor Day and passed the legislative acts to adopt the holiday. On June 28th, 1894, the United States Congress also passed the Law, which provided the legal cover to celebrate Labor Day on the First Monday of September, every year. Also, on the same day, President of the United States, President Grover Cleveland signed a law making the Labor Day a national Holiday.

Why and how do we celebrate July 4th?

The Fourth of July or July 4th is the day when we get a federal holiday, and we go out and have fun, but the question is, why do we celebrate July 4th? As far as we can remember, the tradition of celebrating July 4th is not new. We saw our fathers and forefathers celebrating this day, but what is the reason behind this celebration. If you don’t know why and how do we celebrate July 4th, then keep reading because we will tell you everything you need to know about it. Let’s get started.

Why do we celebrate July 4th?

The Fourth of July was the day when our great nation got freedom from the British Empire. It was the day when our forefathers voted in favor of independence, and the delegates from 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. To commemorate the Declaration of Independence and our forefathers’ efforts, we celebrate this great day, July 4th.

The History of July 4th

If you are a history buff, then you probably know that Britain (England) used to be the superpower a few centuries back, and they used to have colonies around the world. Just like other regions of the world, the American region also had the British colonies where the British used to rule. In 1775, a few American colonies desired to get their independence from the British Empire, and by the end of the year, more colonies joined this effort.

As the idea became more popular, it became very difficult for the British Empire to hold the Americans’ Independence. On June 7th, 1776, the Continental Congress met at the statehouse in Philadelphia to address these issues. During the meeting, Richard Henry Lee from Virginia Delegate introduced the Motion for the independence of colonies.

This Motion started a heated debate, and after intense discussion, the congress decided to form a committee to draft a statement to justify the reason why the colonies get the independence from the Great British Empire. The committee had the following members

Thomas Jefferson from Virginia

John Adams from Massachusetts

Roger Sherman from Connecticut

Benjamin Franklin from Pennsylvania

Robert R. Livingston from New York

The committee drafted the statement, and on July 2nd, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of Richard Henry Lee’s Motion of independence. The Motion got the votes of all the members of the Congress except New York as they abstained from voting. However, the delegate later joined and voted in favor of the Motion. On July 4th, the Deceleration of Independence was formally adopted by the Continental Congress, and since that day, we celebrate the July 4th as Independence Day.

How do we celebrate on July 4th?

July 4th is the day of our independence, and many Americans use exciting and creative ways to celebrate independence. The following activities are associated with the July 4th’s celebration.

Fireworks are the essential part of the July celebration, and we have been using it as a way of celebration for hundreds of years.

Parades are another significant part of the celebrations, and we see the parades in every part of the United States. Parades are usually held in the morning.

As the 4th of July is the Federal Holiday, it allows the families to meet with their family friends and hold the barbecue parties. Some families also prefer to go for a picnic to enjoy this beautiful day with their family.

Decorating the house with red, white, and blue colors, which are the colors of the American Flag, is another custom which very Americans follow.

Similarly, we also see many concerts, baseball games, speeches from POTUS, and other political figures, and other ceremonies.

Why do we celebrate July 4th with Fireworks?

The idea of using the Fireworks on the 4th of July was from John Adams. He mentioned this idea in his letter to his wife, Abigail Adams, where he wrote, “I am apt to believe that it (July 4th) will be celebrated, by succeeding Generations, as the great anniversary festival…It ought to be solemnized with Pomp and Parade, with Shews, Games, Sports, Guns, Bells, Bonfires, and illuminations from one End of this Continent to the other from this Time forward forevermore.”

On July 4th, 1777, America celebrated its first independence day with fireworks. The popular newspaper, Pennsylvania Evening Post, explained the 4th July celebrations in Philadelphia, with the following words “The evening was closed with ring of bells, and at night there was a grand exhibition of fireworks on the commons, and the city was beautifully illuminated.” Using Fireworks has become the important custom of the July 4th celebrations, and we use Fireworks on other occasions & festivals as well.

Usenet is often preferred given its robust architecture that naturally enhances privacy without any add-ons or extra services. While hosting millions of articles at a go, Usenet uses a method called retention to determine the lifespan of a given file since it’s upload time. In this article, we look at Usenet Newsgroups Retention in depth and look at some of the available Usenet providers with the best retention policy. Check out our Best Usenet Providers 2020 and compare retention for yourself.

How Usenet Newsgroups Retention Works

Based on the brief explanation given above, retention can be described as the measure of time that a file will be hosted on Usenet right from its upload to the servers. The time unit is measured in days or 24 hours as one single retention unit. For instance, let’s say a Usenet provider is offering retention for one thousand days; this means that once you upload a file to that vendor’s server, it will be hosted there for the one thousand days before it expires.

Importance of Retention

It is widely known that a Usenet provider cannot keep all the uploaded files indefinitely, hence the importance of retention. Retention is a means of expiring old content to create space for users to upload new content.

With advancements in hardware and compression technologies, most Usenet providers have increased their retention days. Smaller hard disks with higher storage capacity enable the expansion of storage space, both physically and virtually. Better compression algorithms have also helped in compressing large files to sizes that are easily manageable. Below are some of the best Usenet services with the most lucrative retention deals.

UsenetServer

If you understood our explanation of retention. Then you know that Usenetserver is not a force to reckon with, especially with their days retention policy. With their very reasonable prices, days retention is by far the best deal you get. Another added the advantage of this provider is that from time to time; they offer draws that give you the chance to win free retention deals. A better way to visualize their retention in a more understandable form is looking at the retention in years. days is roughly nine years of retention.

Usenet Newsgroup Retention rates indicate the length of time that a post is available to you. Newshosting currently supports over days of retention across all newsgroups. They have all the retention you could ever want. Try Newshosting for yourself!

Giganews

Coming in third place is the one and only Giganews. Despite being one of the top Usenet providers with the most newsgroups, it also provides a whopping 2367 days of Usenet binary data retention. The retention is also affordable, and easy to set up. Giganews also gives freebies every once in a while, so it’s worth checking them out.

Supernews

Last but not least, Supernews is another awesome Usenet provider to consider.Their retention stands at 9 years retention , ten fewer days compared to Giganews for almost the same price. If it were up to me, I’d say Supernews is not a bad bargain. Supernews also maintains a large group of newsgroups, ensuring that they host some of the latest and most trending content on their blazing fast servers.

Usenet Newsgroups Retention can be a daunting topic to grasp or even find detailed information; this is the sole purpose of this guide. If you are looking for a Usenet provider that gives impressive retention, be sure to reference the above list for the ultimate deal. Best Usenet Providers 2020

GrabIt, one of the easiest Free Usenet Newsreader. With GrabIt you can search and download any content on USENET news servers, without downloading gigabytes of headers. You can signup for Grabit Free Newsreader Account. Newshosting offers a 7 day Free Usenet Trial and is compatible with Grabit Free Newsreader. So see for yourself.

Grabit Search Function

GrabIt, like a few other newsreaders, includes a search function. The search function checks and looks into all the newsgroups on the news service of the schemes. For a user that wants to find a particular article or binary, this is of great benefit. The con to this search is that a user is restricted to doing a fixed number of searches without subscribing to the Shemes news service. The queries that would be returned will only be the ones the Schemes service lists and not that of the user’s service. returned will be those listed in the Shemes service and not necessarily of the user’s service. For GrabIt Beta 1.7.2 Beta 3 SSL encryption has now been supported.

Grabit has a number features which I’d also call it’s pros, some of which are:

Grabit Free Newsreader

A Familiar Looking and Easy-to-use User Interface

A lot has been put in place to ensure that downloads of binaries are as easy and fast as possible. It’s the reason a lot of people signup for Grabit.

Exact Resume

Grabit Free Newsreader

You don’t have too waste your bandwidth and time downloading data over and again anymore! Grabit continues from where you paused or stopped your download. It will resume from that same article. It’s smart like that.

NZB file support

GrabIt completely supports the popular NZB format. On your desktop, only double click on an NZB file and Grabit will automatically download all files described in the NZB file.

Post articles

Grabit Free Newsreader

In a situation where you want to make repost request or thank someone for their amazing post, you don’t have to begin another newsreader to post that message, if you have Grabit running. All you have to do is hit that post button, enter your message and leave Grabit to handle the rest.

Automatic Repair and Extract of Downloaded Binaries

Grabit automatically repairs and extracts your downloads. Fill up your batch and leave your PC running when you return it will be completed without fail.

Grabit Free Newsreader

SSL And Multi-Server Supported

All your traffic to Usenet server is fully encrypt with the industry standard SLL technology.

As Grabit is really amazing, I find it hard to come up with downsides to it, after some scrutiny. The few cons I see it has are:

A Bit Cluttered

Files Not Shown As Groups

Very fast connections (>90 Mbps) Not Handled Well

Grabit Free Newsreader

St. Patrick’s Day is a religious and cultural festival that is celebrated annually on 17 March. It is the death date of Saint Patrick’s who is regarded as the most influential saint of Ireland. Saint Patrick’s Day became an official Christian feast day in the 17th century and is observed by the Anglican Communion, the Catholic Church the Lutheran Church and the Eastern Orthodox Church.

The day memorializes St. Patrick and the induction of Christianity in Ireland. It celebrates the culture and heritage of the Irish in general. Celebrations include festivals and public parades, wearing of shamrocks and green attire. Christians would attend church services, and restrictions on eating and drinking alcohol are lifted for the day. There are several Usenet Providers that are offering St. Patrick’s Day Deals don’t miss out.

Don’t Get Pinched

St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s thought wearing green made you invisible to leprechauns, fairy creatures who would pinch anyone they could see (anyone not wearing green). People began pinching those who didn’t wear green as a reminder that leprechauns would sneak up and pinch you if you didn’t wear green.

How is it celebrated?

The celebration usually involves parades, Irish traditional music sessions, and wearing of shamrocks. There are formal gatherings such as banquet and dances. In the past, it was only celebrated by the military, marching bands, fire brigades, cultural organizations, voluntary associations, fraternities to mention a few. Over time, many of the parades have transformed to carnivals. Many efforts have been to use the Irish language on that this day. In Ireland, the week of St. Patrick’s Day is the Irish language week.

St. Patrick’s Day

Drowning or wetting the shamrock is a traditional custom on St Patrick’s Day, especially in Ireland. At the later stage of the celebration, the shamrock is placed into the bottom of a cup and filled with beer or whiskey. The mixture is then drunk as a toast to St Patrick and Ireland. The shamrock is occasionally swallowed with the drink. It could also be taken out of the drink and tossed over the shoulder for good luck.

Significance of Saint Patrick

Saint Patrick was a fifth-century British Christian missionary and bishop in Ireland. He is the primary patron saint of Ireland, popularly known as “Apostle of Ireland.” Saint Patrick is also venerated in the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church and Anglican Church as apostle and Enlightener of Ireland.

St. Patrick’s Day

Saint Patrick preached about Christ to the people of Ireland. Though the task was his persistence led to the building a strong foundation of Christianity. The Irish people listened to him and received is teaching because he was able to Christianize many of their symbols. The most famous and significant of them being the Shamrock parable.

Shamrock Parable

Legend has it that St. Patrick taught the Irish about the doctrine of the Holy Trinity by showing people the shamrock. The shamrock is a three-leaved plant which he used to illustrate the Christian teaching of three in one God. The story of this teaching first appeared in writing in 1726. Ever since the shamrock has become a significant symbol for St Patrick’s Day.

The Snake Banisher

It is believed that the absence of snake in Ireland was because Saint Patrick banished them. In the Legend, St. Patrick is seen chasing the snakes into the sea after attacking him while fasting on the top of a hill. This theme can be related to the account of the staff of Moses in the Bible. St. Patrick’s Day

Patrick speaks with ancient ancestors

The work of Acallam na Senorach tells of Patrick meeting two ancient Irish warriors, Oisín and Caílte mac Rónáin during his evangelical travels. St. Patrick tried to convert them to Christianity, but they defended their pagan past.

While many would disagree with some of St. Patrick teaching, the fact that a man dedicated is life proclaiming the gospel around 1,600 years ago is worth celebrating. His teachings and adventure resulted in the conversion of tens of thousands into Christianity.

Benefits of Having Virtual Private Network

Benefits of Having Virtual Private Network Protecting yourself online has become more important than ever since technology has started to take over our lives. We do everything online. We check our bank accounts, we buy out clothes, we talk to friends, and we book vacations. Every aspect of our life can be handled through the world of the Internet. Have you ever noticed that certain websites seem to know where you are living, city name or zip code? Or have you seen ads on your Facebook page come up about events or businesses in your area? That’s because every website you go on tracks your IP address, and makes lists of where you’ve been. Imagine a room full of people just watching you as you surf the Internet all day long. This should scare everyone. In this post we are going to discuss Benefits of Having Virtual Private Network. NordVPN is our editors choice for Best VPN Provider 2023. Read our Best VPN 2023 reviews to find which one is right for you

Having something called a VPN can significantly change your online sessions by making you and your browsing unknown to other users or automatic trackers on the network you are connected to. As of now, your browsing history, cookie data, passwords and usernames, bank information, contacts and everything else on your computer that touches the internet can be traced, seen and stolen. Having a VPN can change this. Benefits of Having Virtual Private Network

A VPN is a Virtual Private Network, which works like a virtual network that can secure your Internet data by scrambling up your IP address with one in another location. Hiding your local ID will make it hard to trace your location and identity through IP address checks. Getting your own VPN service is simple, as there are many companies that offer VPN services for a small payment each month. Once you download the VPN program to your computer or mobile device, you connect to the network, and then it just works like an app. An imaginary shield will block other users and different websites from tracking who you are, where you are and what you are doing. Benefits of Having Virtual Private Network

As of now, you probably do not have a VPN. This means that your computer, tablet and mobile phone are not secure, not private and geographically restricted. Being secure is important because you want to be able to surf without wondering what might happens with your data. Privacy is very important when it comes to online applications, bank statements and location because someone could hack your network and trace all of your information, making it possible to steal your identity, or something similar. You are also geographically restricted without using a VPN because if a certain website are not available in your area, you cannot access it. With a VPN, you can switch your IP address with one from another country that the website is catered to, and have full access.

Having a VPN is like having a virus protector it’s Internet security. While you may think you are safe on your own home network, there are still ways into finding your data through the websites you visit, the people you talk to and the things you do online. Having a VPN will encrypt your data on your home network, as well as Wi-Fi networks in public locations like a coffee shop or an airport, which may offer free Wi-Fi. Benefits of Having Virtual Private Network

VPN’s are good for businesses too. With a VPN, a business can connect a few computers together to access different information among the computers, but still keep the information secure from outside sources. Certain companies offer VPN service packs for businesses at a lower rate for a certain amount of devices connected.

As I mentioned earlier, there are many companies that offer VPN services to encrypt your data to keep your computer safe while online. Many of these companies have competitive features and prices, and most have free trial versions. If you are looking into getting a VPN, look around a few trial versions before you buy, and see what is right for you.

Benefits of Having Virtual Private Network

Here are some of the benefits to having a VPN installed on your computer or mobile device:

You have great security from hackers and other online predators

You are anonymous online to spamming websites, web filters and other tracking location

Break geographical location barriers while watching media, playing or testing apps or games, or accessing websites from other countries

Access your computer at home while you are on a mobile device away at work, school or elsewhere

Bypass any censorships rules that are on certain websites blocking them

Access public Wi-Fi with no doubt that your information will be safe and secure, including information that you put into websites like banking sites, shopping sites and travel sites.

Benefits of Having Virtual Private Network. In reality, when we think about how many people are online in the world right now, we should be worried about our online privacy. Everyone is everywhere, and you are so easily traced. Every website you click on, every page, picture and link tracks where you’ve been, and with a VPN Provider like IPVanish, you can ensure this data becomes encrypted and impossible to trace. It would be very worthwhile for everyone to have a VPN to protect them, almost like a virus blocker or ad blocker, to ensure that no harm will come to their computers, tablets, mobile devices or online identity.

NordVPN is now eight years old and the company is throwing the 70% discounts to its users. The story of NordVPN started in 2012 but the company has grown and become one of the most prominent VPN services in a very short time.
Quick History of NordVPN

NordVPN is only 8 years old but the company has a very rich and inspiring history. NordVPN was founded by 4 childhood friends with the aim to provide liberation to internet users. They started this project as a side hustle as all of them were having day jobs and they used to spend the rest of the time on NordVPN.

Happy Birthday NordVPN

They launched the Windows client of the NordVPN and users were required to configure it themselves. In starting, the company had only one server in Germany but soon this number grew to the 6 servers.

Just like any other startups, NordVPN wasn’t very popular at the start and by 2013, they only had 1000 active users. In 2013, the core team of NordVPN was also very small and the only handful of people were running the company. Everyone was doing multiple roles because it was a small company.

In the next few months, the company launched the NordVPN Windows App which was another milestone. The company launched its NordVPN clients for Android, IOS and macOS in 2016. At the end of 2017, the company also launched its browser extension for Google Chrome. The company also introduced 24/7 customer support in September of 2014 which helped the company in getting loyal customers. By the end of 2014, the company crossed the milestone of 10,000 active users around the world.

Fast-forward to 2020, NordVPN has now more than 12 million active users around the world. The company is offering its services to users as well as corporate clients around the world.

NordVPN Efforts in promoting Online Security

NordVPN has a commitment to online security and the company has been trying to improve the overall online security and transparency.

In 2015, NordVPN launched its services in Australia when the government passed its data retention laws. These laws required Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Telecom Companies to retain the metadata of their users for 2 years. The government faced a huge backlash from the public and NordVPN went global when it launched its services in Australia.

Similarly, during Uganda’s General Elections of 2016, the governments blocked access to social media on two occasions which prevented the users to access the social media and share their thoughts. NordVPN launched its Emergency VPN in Uganda to allow the citizens to access social media and share their thoughts.

The company has also considered the forefront runner when it comes to self-regulation and transparency. In 2018, the company allowed independent security firms to audit the service to guarantee that the company doesn’t keep a log of its services. Similarly, the company also allowed the third-party penetration testers to conduct the stress-testing tests on the NordVPN Apps.

Since then, many other VPN companies have followed the NordVPN’s steps and allowed the independent to audit their services. This trend is great for the end-users as it will help in trust-building and it will establish trust between the users and VPN Services.

NordVPN also launched the “VPN Trust Initiative”, with 4 other major VPN Services, to promote online security, self-regulation, and transparency in the VPN industry.

Happy Birthday NordVPN

How Secure is NordVPN?

NordVPN is one of the most trusted VPN services out there and it has more than 12 million active users around the world. When it comes to the privacy and security of the users, NordVPN leaves no stones unturned.

Happy Birthday NordVPN

The company uses the state of the art technologies and features to ensure that your online privacy and security is intact. NordVPN uses the Advanced Encryption Standard (AES) for the communication between the servers and your device. It is the most secure encryption standard out there and it is impossible to break this encryption. It is the same standard which is used by the Governments and militaries to protect their communication and state secrets.

The company uses the 256-bit key size and AES with 256-bit keys is impossible to break. If someone has all the current computation resources in the world and uses the brute-force attack, Even then he would need billions and billions of years to crack this encryption. In the short term, it is impossible to break this encryption.

Happy Birthday NordVPN

On top of impenetrable encryption, NordVPN uses the advanced privacy features such as CyberSec, Double VPN, Automatic Kill Switch, DNS LEAK Protection, Onion over VPN, etc. will help you protect your online privacy. The company also have more than 5565 Servers around the world which you can use to bypass geo-restrictions and access restricted content.

Happy Birthday NordVPN

The company is also constantly working on improving its service and security features. NordVPN has recently embraced the Wireguard Protocol through its NordLynx Tool. Wireguard is the next-generation open-source tunneling VPN Protocol which provides the ultimate security. It is also much faster than OpenVPN which is considered the best VPN protocol in the industry.

WHAT DOES VALENTINE’S DAY MEAN?

Valentine’s Day is an annual holiday identified around the world. It celebrates romantic love, making it a popular day for couples to spend together. Valentine’s Day is traditionally related to pink hearts, romance, flowers, candy or different sweet things, and the exchange of cards, called valentines, that explicit love.

Valentine’s Day takes place every February 14. Across america and in other places across the world, candy, plant life and presents are exchanged between loved ones, all within the call of St. Valentine. But who’s this mysterious saint and where did those traditions come from? Find out approximately the history of Valentine’s Day, from the historic Roman ritual of Lupercalia that welcomed spring to the card-giving customs of Victorian England.

The history of Valentine’s Day–and the tale of its saint–is shrouded in mystery. We do know that February has long been celebrated as a month of romance, and that St. Valentine’s Day, as we know it today, carries vestiges of both Christian and historic Roman tradition. But who was Saint Valentine, and how did he emerge as related to this ancient rite?

Who was the Real St. Valentine?

The Valentines’s Day gets its name from a famous saint, but there are several stories of who he was.The Catholic Church recognizes at least three different saints named Valentine or Valentinus, all of whom have been martyred. One legend contends that Valentine was a priest who served during the third century in Rome. When Emperor Claudius II decided that single men made better soldiers than those with wives and families, he outlawed marriage for young men. Valentine, realizing the injustice of the decree, defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. When Valentine’s actions were discovered, Claudius ordered that he thrown in jail and then be put to death. Still others insist that it was Saint Valentine of Terni, a bishop, who was the true namesake of the holiday. He, too, was beheaded by Claudius II outside Rome.

Other stories suggest that Valentine may have been killed for attempting to help Christians escape harsh Roman prisons, where they were often beaten and tortured. According to one legend, an imprisoned Valentine actually sent the first “valentine” greeting himself after he fell in love with a young girl–possibly his jailor’s daughter–who visited him during his confinement.

Origins of Valentine’s Day: A Pagan Festival in February

While some believe that Valentine’s Day is celebrated in the middle of February to commemorate the anniversary of Valentine’s death or burial–which probably occurred around A.D. 270–others claim that the Christian church may have decided to place St. Valentine’s feast day in the middle of February in an effort to “Christianize” the pagan celebration of Lupercalia. Celebrated at the ides of February, or February 15, Lupercalia was a fertility festival dedicated to Faunus, the Roman god of agriculture, as well as to the Roman founders Romulus and Remus.

To begin the festival, members of the Luperci, an order of Roman priests, would gather at a sacred cave where the infants Romulus and Remus, the founders of Rome, were believed to have been cared for by a she-wolf. The priests would sacrifice a goat, for fertility, and a dog, for purification. They would then strip the goat’s hide into strips, dip them into the sacrificial blood and take to the streets, gently slapping both women and crop fields with the goat hide. Far from being fearful, Roman women welcomed the touch of the hides because it was believed to make them more fertile in the coming year. Later in the day, according to legend, all the young women in the city would place their names in a big urn. The city’s bachelors would each choose a name and become paired for the year with his chosen woman. These matches often ended in marriage.

Valentine’s Day, also called St. Valentine’s Day, holiday (February 14) when lovers express their affection with greetings and gifts. The holiday has origins in the Roman festival of Lupercalia, held in mid-February. The festival, which celebrated the coming of spring, included fertility rites and the pairing off of women with men by lottery. At the end of the 5th century, Pope Gelasius I replaced Lupercalia with St. Valentine’s Day. It came to be celebrated as a day of romance from about the 14th century.

Although there were several Christian martyrs named Valentine, the day may have taken its name from a priest who was martyred about 270 CE by the emperor Claudius II Gothicus. According to legend, the priest signed a letter “from your Valentine” to his jailer’s daughter, whom he had befriended and, by some accounts, healed from blindness. Other accounts hold that it was St. Valentine of Terni, a bishop, for whom the holiday was named, though it is possible the two saints were actually one person. Another common legend states that St. Valentine defied the emperor’s orders and secretly married couples to spare the husbands from war. It is for this reason that his feast day is associated with love.

Formal messages, or valentines, appeared in the 1500s, and by the late 1700s commercially printed cards were being used. The first commercial valentines in the United States were printed in the mid-1800s. Valentines commonly depict Cupid, the Roman god of love, along with hearts, traditionally the seat of emotion. Because it was thought that the avian mating season begins in mid-February, birds also became a symbol of the day. Traditional gifts include candy and flowers, particularly red roses, a symbol of beauty and love.

As it turns out, nobody really knows the true history behind this storied holiday, nor do any of the theories completely check out. Even historians find themselves arguing over the exact traditions from which the present-day holiday takes inspiration.

But here, we’re sharing as much as we know about the topic, including the murky origin of Valentine’s Day and its interesting history. Surprisingly, its backstory—though not confirmed—is actually quite dark and even a bit bloody. Strange traditions, pagan rituals, and grisly executions abound. If you’re not faint of heart though, you’ll enjoy learning about everything we’ve compiled here. Who knows? It might even inform your Valentine’s Day wishes!

WHERE DOES THE WORD VALENTINE COME FROM?

The day is named, of course, for St. Valentine—we all know that by now. But why? Who is this mysterious Valentine?

According to The New York Times, it’s possible that the heart-filled holiday is based on a combination of two men. There were, after all, two Valentines executed on February 14 (albeit in different years) by Emperor Claudius II, reports NPR. It’s believed that the Catholic Church may have established St. Valentine’s Day in order to honor these men, who they believed to be martyrs. What’s more, it’s possible that one of these men, Saint Valentine of Terni, had been secretly officiating weddings for Roman soldiers against the emperor’s wishes, making him, in some eyes, a proponent of love.

But others believe that St. Valentine’s Day was actually designated by Pope Gelasius I in order to replace the ancient Roman festival Lupercalia.

The debaucherous feast fell around the same time and involved a pagan ritual of naked men whipping women with the blood-soaked hides of sacrificial animals (yes, really), which they believed promoted fertility. Following this flagellation was an equally strange tradition, in which men selected women’s names at random to decide who would remain together the rest of the festival, or, if the match was successful, for life.

WHY DO WE CELEBRATE VALENTINES DAY?

Whether or not Chaucer can be fully credited, it is true that he and fellow writer Shakespeare popularized the amorous associations surrounding the day. Soon, people began penning and exchanging love letters to celebrate Valentine’s Day, and by the early 1910s, an American company that would one day become Hallmark began distributing its more official “Valentine’s Day cards.” Flowers, candy, jewelry, and more followed, and the rest, of course, is history.
WHAT PART DOES CUPID PLAY ON VALENTINE’S DAY?

It’s not all about St. Valentine! Cupid—that winged baby boy often seen on Valentine’s Day cards and paraphernalia—is another symbol of this love-filled holiday, and it’s easy to understand why. In Roman mythology, Cupid was the son of Venus, goddess of love and beauty. He was known for shooting arrows at both gods and humans, causing them to fall instantly in love with one another. While it’s unclear exactly when Cupid was brought into the Valentine’s Day story, it’s certainly clear why.

Valentine’s Day is a time to celebrate romance and love and kissy-face. But the origins of this festival of candy and cupids are actually dark, bloody — and a bit muddled.

If you are new to Usenet. You need help in Choosing A Usenet Provider that is just right for you. Unfortunately, this can be a daunting task. This is because there are several factors to take into account. Moreover, they all seem pretty much the same. In this post, we share important tips for selecting the right Usenet provider.

Retention period

This is a period that indicates the duration which the article will be available for acquisition since it was first posted. Usually, this period is 1,200 days. However, some are much higher while others are lower. UsenetServer just increased their retention rates to a whopping Days Retention

Transfer limits

Choosing A Usenet Provider, Some providers limit the amount of data a user can download in a given month. On the other hand, some are unlimited. You need to consider the type of content you want to download and think about the size of the transfer limit you want. Usually, providers offer more than two tiers, one with a limit and one without.

Subscription or block account

Subscription plans can be paid either yearly or monthly. Thus, depending on your plan, you can get a particular number of data per month or even unlimited. The majority of the Usenet providers do charge between $5 and $25 as a monthly subscription. NewsDemon and Astraweb.

On the other hand, a block account is one with specified amount of data. For instance, 1TB you can use it the way you want. This is a better option if you are a seasoned downloader. Usually, block accounts are bought as backups to the subscription accounts.

Server connections Choosing A Usenet Provider

You may assume that some connections offer faster downloads than others. However, this is not always the case. Some providers can offer you even 100 Mbps connection. In most cases, speeds do increase when you cap some connections on your newsreader app. If you have a slow speed, this factor does not matter a lot.

Security

It is advisable to choose Usenet providers who offer downloads through TLS/SSL. This is necessary as it encrypts data transfers. This ensures that are you not snooped by anyone. It is advisable to use a VPN. Using SSL may result in slower downloads because it takes the time to encrypt data and decrypt data. However, it is it worth it.

Country

If you are after optimal speeds, you should choose a Usenet provider that offers servers that are geographically located near you. There are Usenet providers based in Europe, US, Netherlands to name a few. If you are unsure check our Usenet Service Provider Reviews. Choosing A Usenet Provider

Price

This is an important consideration before making your decision. This is the price of your block or subscription account. Usually, basic capped subscriptions with the major providers start at $10 and can go up.

Extras

Indexers, VPNs, and newsreader apps are some of the cool extras, which are included in the Usenet plans. You should consider them as bonuses and not the major criteria for making your decision. Choosing A Usenet Provider

Reviews

Choosing A Usenet Provider. After coming up with a list of potential providers, you should read reviews to get facts. This will help you find best the right Usenet provider that meets your needs.
