Well, it depends on what you call "rave". "Rave" for me is not just the people, it's electronic music (or "repetitive beats", as the CJB calls it). Therefore I guess it all depends on how far you want to go from modern-day doofnoise. Late 80s in England is clearly a turning point, and the word "rave" was associated with it at the time. And a lot of stuff in the 60s were of a similar ilk, even if the music was different. But if you're going to be completely loose about the music, and just refer to a large bunch of people taking drugs and dancing to an outdoors party, I'm sure you can go back to before Christ..... Those Greeks used to have quite a good time!
