Well, he wouldn't be running the country, but as a figurehead he'd make the country a laughingstock. He really is a ninny. If he'd just laughed and said, "I thought the whole world knew whom I was sleeping with," that would probably have been the end of it. He's his own worst enemy. After that vast outpouring of grief at Diana's death, he decided he had to improve his image and hired a spin doctor, Mark Bolland. Bolland succeeded so well that just two years ago when I was in Scotland, I was shocked to discovered that most people had forgotten all about Diana and were in love with Charles, and according to the Times, the queen was prepared to agree that he could marry Camilla as soon as the Golden Jubilee (2002) was over. Then he let Fawcett lure him into selling the royal gifts. That led to Sir Michael Peat's investigation, which revived George Smith's charges, which until then had been safely filed away and forgotten. That led to the charges of theft against Diana's butler, Paul Burrell, who had Diana's tell-all "rape tape," which Charles & Fawcett were so eager to get their hands on. Those charges galvanized Burrell to fight back with his recently published book, and here we are. The scandal probably won't bring down the monarchy but I suspect it will keep Charles from succeeding to the throne. Barbara
