Thanks for this link! What the report fails to mention is that Michael
Fawcett, Charles's "trusted aide" involved in the scandal, is the
"secretary" involved in the earlier scandal about Charles's sale of
royal gifts (strictly verboten), which resulted in an inside
investigation by Sir Michael Peat, former Chancellor of the Exchequer
who some years ago persuaded the Queen that she'd better start paying
income taxes. Peat's report revealed that Fawcett was arranging the
sales of royal gifts and taking a 20% commission before passing the
rest of the sale price to Charles. Both were pocketing the money and
not declaring it as income. The report also declared that Fawcett, who
was being paid £185,000 a year, had to be fired. Charles dutifully
fired Fawcett and immediately rehired him as an independent
contractor, a status he retains today. Fawcett (with wife and kiddies)
had also been occupying rent-free a large grace-and-favor house owned
by Charles. When he was "fired," Charles "sold" him the house, holding
the mortgage himself, so Fawcett is still occupying it. Whether David
Smith's allegations are true or not, the relationship of Charles and
Fawcett certainly sounds unusually close. Diana is reported to have
hated Fawcett because of "his unhealthy influence over Charles."
