I think given the choice between believing that the ancient stories of
superstitious and gullible men might be, shall we say, out of touch
with the real world, and believing that spiritual wars are won by
abandoning your troops, denying them access to vital intelligence,
aiding and supporting the enemy, executing maneuvers that consistently
expose your weakest flanks to the enemy's best assaults, withholding
direct support, allowing your chain of command to break down to the
point that there is considerable confusion among the soldiers as to
who the legitimate officers are, and ultimately sending most of your
own children to eternal torment in hell--well, I know which
alternative seems most reasonable to me, and I think that 99 times out
of 100, if the 99 times dealt with non-Catholic stories, you would
probably agree with me. The question is why you don't in the 100th
case.
