His problem is what is called "invincible ignorance"
by the Catholic Church. That is if he really believes
in what he says.

Subject: Definition of Invincible Ignorance

"A lack of knowledge which persists despite
ordinary efforts to dispel it. Actions which
proceed from invincible ignorance are neither
voluntary nor imputable since nothing can be
willed unless it is previously known. Thus
a bad action done out of invincible ignorance
cannot be a formal sin"

Source: "The Maryknoll Catholic Dictionary"
         1965 edition

Example: A child educated in Protestant,
Muslim or Jewish surroundings would
probably be invincibly ignorant of the
Immaculate Conception.
