As I understand it, w/ion Islam, girls are not to be married until they've
reached puberty, at a minimum.

Perhaps you are thinking of other cultures where children are married?
Louis XV was married at age 15.  Do you suppose he had reached puberty
already?  His daughter, Princess Elizabeth, married Duke Philip de Bourbon
of Parma when she was about 12 years old.  Do you suppose she had reached
puberty, yet?
