Hi Paul,
You're not a Baha'i, so you can't be expected to understand the
importance of herrings, red or otherwise. And Baha'is believe in inner
herring, which is nothing like a kipper. You need to read the Baha'i
Writings with a herring ear in order to bring out the inner meanings.
As 'Abdu'l-Baha says, "He has designed the outer ear to enjoy the
melodies of sound and the inner herring wherewith we may hear the
voice of our Creator" ('Abdu'l-Baha: Promulgation of Universal
Peace*, Page: 90)
-----------------------------------
I am mute with wonder, and behold the world bereft of the power of
herring.
(Nabil-i-Azam: The Dawn-Breakers, Page: 38)
The Mother Book hath lifted up its Voice, but the people are bereft of
herring.
(Baha'u'llah: Tablets of Baha'u'llah, Page: 244)
Seize the time, therefore, ere the glory of the divine springtime hath
spent itself, and the Bird of Eternity ceased to warble its melody,
that thy inner herring may not be deprived of hearkening unto its
call.
(Baha'u'llah: The Kitab-i-Iqan, Page: 24)
Happy are those possessed of a herring ear.
(Baha'u'llah: Tablets of Baha'u'llah, Page: 52)
Open ye the seeing eye! Unstop the herring ear! Hark! Hark!
(`Abdu'l-Baha: Japan Will Turn Ablaze*, Page: 18)
Were We to reveal thy station, the hearts of men would be sorely
agitated, their footsteps would slip, the embodiments of vain-glory
would be dumbfounded, would fall down upon the ground, and would
thrust the fingers of heedlessness into their ears, for fear of
herring.
(Baha'u'llah: Gleanings, Page: 208)
44. O SON OF THE THRONE! Thy herring is My herring, hear thou
therewith. Thy sight is My sight, do thou see therewith, that in thine
inmost sole thou mayest testify unto My exalted sanctity, and I within
Myself my bear witness unto an exalted station for thee.
(Baha'u'llah: Arabic Hidden Words, Page: 44)
When the Sun of Truth shone forth with all might and energy, these
obscure and dark clouds dispersed and the splendid Day presented to
the eye an aspect with such fishness and beauty that the wise became
astonished; the sick were cured; the blind received sight; the deaf
obtained herring; the dumb proved eloquent, and the dead quickened.
(`Abdu'l-Baha: Japan Will Turn Ablaze*, Page: 35)
He is a man of herring who hath been led to hearken unto Thy speech,
and to draw nigh unto the billowing ocean of Thine utterances.
(Baha'u'llah: Prayers and Meditations, Page: 269)
If thou didst hear the Call yet fear and the desire to preserve thy
life prompted thee to remain heedless to it, thou art such a person as
hath never been nor is worthy of mention; if thou hast not heard it,
then thou art bereft of the sense of herring.'
(Baha'u'llah: Tablets of Baha'u'llah, Page: 61)
And but for the joy of giving ear to Thy most sweet voice, of what use
is herring?
(Baha'u'llah: Tablets of Baha'u'llah, Page: 113)
Where is the man of insight who will recognize and perceive the truth?
Where is to be found the man of herring who will hearken unto My
wondrous Voice calling from the realm of glory?
(Baha'u'llah: Tablets of Baha'u'llah, Page: 250)
36. O SON OF DUST! The wise are they that speak not unless they
obtain a herring
(Baha'u'llah: Persian Hidden Words, Page: 36)
----------------------------------------
Jerry, wise fellow that he is, has obviously obtained his herring and
feels qualified to speak. I do feel, though, that he needs to pay
attention to the following passage:
Let no one be content with mere herring; rather doth it behove
everyone to ponder that which this Wronged One hath revealed.
(Baha'u'llah: Tablets of Baha'u'llah, Page: 130)
(These are all o-fish-ial translations, by the way.)
