Marcellus Jacob was sentenced Wednesday evening to seven years in prison 
for what Chief Judge Barry Stuart described as a savage, brutal and 
horrific sexual assault.
Stuart told the 21-year-old he could not use his tragic past as a victim 
of child abuse and neglect to avoid facing the responsibility he must 
accept for his actions.
But for the tragic childhood, Jacob would be receiving a sentence in 
excess of 10 years for the severity of his crime, the judge told Jacob – 
and a territorial courtroom that drew a gallery filled with far more 
onlookers than usual.
Stuart warned him that if he didn’t succeed in treatment, some judge 
somewhere down the road would be sentencing him to an even longer term 
behind bars.
“The evidence before this court, particularly the Dr. (Karl) Williams’ 
report, indicates you are a serious danger to the safety of any 
community you are at, and you will continue to be until you get 
treatment,” Stuart said.
The judge said the seven years are in addition to the six months Jacob 
spent in remand, which generally counts as double time because it’s 
served before a conviction is entered. Therefore, said Stuart, Jacob’s 
sentence will be recorded as eight years.
Jacob pleaded guilty to raping, sodomizing and torturing a Whitehorse 
woman at knifepoint for five hours after he broke into her home early 
one morning last July.
