Typically in a succesful civil suit, the judge orders the defendant to pay
the plaintiff's legal costs.

The only way he received less is if they threatened to appeal, and offered a
lower settlement in exchange for dropping the appeal.

And I am quite certain that if his lost wages were taken in to account when
the award was calculated.
