Hindustan Times
Technology exposes bogus rape charge
Archis Mohan
(New Delhi, July 22)
------------------------------------------------------------------------

On July 5, a 25-year-old woman approached the Tilak Marg police
station alleging that she had been raped by a driver employed with the
US embassy inside a Maruti van in the high security zone of India
Gate.

A case of rape was registered. The woman, who claimed to be an MBA
student from Mumbai stated in the FIR that she had befriended the
driver some two months back, when they had met at PVR Saket.

According to her the driver, Suresh Joshua asked her to meet him at
India Gate on July 4. Joshua apparently raped her in the car with the
help of two others. She even supplied the police with "evidence" a
T-shirt that Joshua was ostensibly wearing at the time of the act. It
had semen on it.

The woman staying as a paying guest in Greater Kailash gave the police
her references in Mumbai, and Dehradun. These references were,
however, found to be bogus. The police then started tailing the woman.
A meeting between her and Joshua was videotaped where she demanded Rs
2 lakh from him for dropping the rape charges.

The next step was to check the cell phone records. "We tried to find
the location of the driver and the woman at the time of the alleged
rape through their cell phones. The records revealed that the two were
at different places at the time and were actually talking to each
other on the phone," said an officer.

What finally nailed the woman was the preliminary report by the
Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL). The CFSL tests on the
T-shirt indicated that the semen on the cloth was of some other man
and not Joshuaís.

The cops are now waiting for CFSL's final report before they the file
the closure report of the case and prosecute the woman. The woman can
be prosecuted for extortion and giving false evidence.
