<< I would like to know some opinions on Bush's 2001 decision to only allow federal funding on already existing stem cells. Do believe this was fair to the scientific community? Do you think that politics and science should mix? Is it unfair to people with diseases such as juvenile diabetes that research is limited? Do you believe the medical field should have more power and freedom in controlling what is researched? >>

Bush didn't make a law against stem cell resarch, all he did was not provide money for it. I don't know that it was in the plans of the fathers of this country for Government to provide everything for the people. If stem cell reasearch was such a great thing, government wouldn't have to be involved. Such medical progress would create such great profit potential, the government wouldn't be able to get a penny in since every private investor would want a part. Since this isn't happening, anybody would have to question why. Perhaps there is no way to capitalize on it, perhaps it would take too long for a return, or perhaps it's not realistic enough for somebody to provide money for this. I don't know. But I'm always a little skeptical about government getting financially involved with medical reasearch. Moral and Religious issues get in the way as well. Regardless of it's outcome, many people still hold to their views even if it means defeat of a good thing. I'm sure that in 50 years from now, this reasearch will either be going on or have already produced results. Only time will tell.
