This happens EVERY single time that there is a strike, the corporate
controlled right-winged news media chooses to ignore the reason why
workers are going on strike, and focuses instead on the disruption this
is causing to consumers. This is a carefully calculated strategy to
drive a wedge between the striking workers and the general public.
One of the very few exceptions to this rule is when a few years ago, UPS
workers went on strike, the general public was largely supportive,
because everyone understood the concept of the "part-timing of America".
UPS management was seeking to reduce the number of full time workers,
and replace them with more workers on a part time basis, in order to
avoid having to pay full time benefits. This exploitation of the worker
was a happening at a time when UPS's profits were shooting thru the
stratosphere. The UPS strike was eventually successful, because no
matter what angle the corporate controlled media presented on this
story, the public sided with the workers. And we had a pro-Union
President back then, Bill Clinton.
In the latest news, Grocery and Municipal workers have gone on strikes
in Southern California. The Los Angeles Times, and the Washington Post,
among other papers, have said very little about what the issues are that
have driven the workers to go on strike, they have instead focused on
the inconvenience to shoppers as well as the disruption to management.
Some of the striking Grocery workers are only making $6.75 an hour, and
all they are asking for is a .50 cent raise, plus a continuation of
their health benefits. Subsidiaries of Safeway, Albertson and Ralph's,
among others, are not only refusing to give them any raises, but they
are actually threatening to take away the workers' health coverage.
Media Critic Eric Alterman recently wrote a column, in which he debunked
the theory that any such thing as a Liberal media exists any more, he
noted that even the so called "Liberal" media icons of PBS and NPR, they
have shows titled "Money Line", and "Market Place". He opined that if
we really had a "Liberal" media, then they would have shows called
"Labor Line" and "Workers' Place"?
