Democracy needs to be fixed

We have to admit it - democracy is not working well. We can blame the
big corporations and the media conglomerates, but the real reason is a
politically inactive citizenry. The citizenry ultimately decides
whether democracy lives or dies.

Part of the problem is that democracy must be learned, but we are not
taught democracy. We might be taught about democracy in a history
class, but we are not taught democracy. Think about it. Someone can
tell you one hundred times how to swing a baseball bat, or how to type
on a computer, but until you have actually done it yourself, you
really do not know how to do it. The same is true with respect to
responsibly excercising political power.

People need to learn how to responsibly excercise the power they have
as citizens. They need to learn how to rationally discuss and debate
issues. They need to learn how to come to an acceptable compromise.
(Something that is crucial for the survival of democracy but is so
lacking nowadays.)
