Russia has said that it can intervene in former states of the Soviet Union
to protect Russian nationals...And recently some of the Baltic states have
joined NATO.

So the Baltic states joining NATO seems to be pressure on the poltical
fundamentals of the region...

But Russia wants to join the European Union...while the EU wants to see
intermediate steps from Russia.
