Nope. The first Republican President led the war against slavery. Of
course, after he was shot, the greedy and graft-ridden Republicans who
took over then screwed with the south so badly after the war that it
took more than a hundred years before the South would vote Republican.

Of course, it also took the Republicans changing from their original
values to espouse reactionary religious nonsense...
