Its cleaner than it was during the 13th century to judge by the
vivid complaints issued by people of that time -- but the black
death, and economic collapse may have cleaned it up during the
three subsequent centuries.  Alternatively, people may have been
so troubled by other matters during those centuries that few
thought to complain.
