Your basic rights - life, liberty, the pursuit of happiness - are yours 
and are inalienable
because they derive from your nature.  That's the easy part.

The problem is not having these rights, but _exercising_ them.  Your 
exercise of your
right to life can be taken from you thoroughly and permanently if you 
are killed.  Your
exercise of your right to liberty can be suspended if you are jailed, 
though your right
remains unextinguished within you.  Your right to the pursuit of 
happiness requires work,
or extraordinary luck combined with some level-headedness, to be 
exercised and
actually _bring_ you happiness.
