Maybe right that is my point:
A religion that believes to be the sole owner of truth and everybody
else goes to hell in a handbasket can't be tolerant.
If you are right this might be ok and no tolerance is required, but what
if you are wrong?
Sorry for using an extreme example, but I think this is the worst-case
scenario for people that believe to be the owners of truth:
If inquisition was right and our present life is nothing and our future
one is all it was surely as well ok to burn some innocent people to
death: They were just sent more quickly to paradise and that fire just
spared them some time in purgatory so quite obviously no real damage was
done. On the other hand it was much more important to stop the guilty
ones from infecting others with their wickedness and to deter them from
acting openly - that way the ones that weren't caught yet would at least
be slowed down.
Their argumentation was absolutely correct: In case their assumption was
right they did the very best to maximize the number of souls reaching
heaven.
