if true - and it wouldn't surprise me if it is -  i think that's because 
we're a nation of cynics, even, or especially, when it comes to our 
glorious political leaders.

in the states they swallow hard or soft and support their presidents, 
apparently as a matter of principle and in support of America the icon.
