The interests of the gun manufacturers and of gun owners do not always
coincide. The manufacturers, for example, were strong backers of the
Gun Control Act of 1968 - because it eliminated competition from military
surplus imports and ended mail-order sales.
I'd not be at all surprised if they were on the wrong side of this issue,
if the NRA gave them some sort of cover.
But the NRA isn't going to, and the S&W debacle has shown them the
consequences of breaking ranks.
