Unlike people who cut their wrists (at least down near the hand) or swallow a bottle of Tylenol before calling 911, a person who uses a gun to commit suicide isn't just "crying out for help." That person has chosen a gun because he has made the decision to die. Deprived of a gun, that person is going to choose from the myriad other means of ending his life. Simply put, a person who has chosen to die is going to find a way to die.
