That's a broad generalization. The indoor range where I shoot (lots of LEO types, CW permits and training and so forth) won't participate at the major local gun shows after the local news got a 12-year-old kid in to buy a gun. In fact, that same store wouldn't sell me certain types of .38 ammunition without first asking me whether it was for target practice (safe...don't care about penetration) or home defense, because he didn't want to sell me ammunition that might penetrate the neighbor's house if I fired it in my own. Also, one must point out that organizations like the NRA advocate additional punishment when guns are used in crimes. The ONLY NRA radio ad I ever heard said, simply, there are all kinds of gun laws in the books that the government simply ignores or doesn't try to enforce, so why spend more money passing more laws? Instead, why not enforce the ones that are already on the books. I was raised by a county sheriff department's weapons instructor. His position was the simple: If somebody uses a gun to commit a crime, double or triple the sentence right off the bat with mandatory jail time because a firearm was involved. It's a very simple concept. In the meantime, I've taught many a liberal to shoot. They're not all gun-toting idiots. -c
