Denktas claims that Loizidou Case is used as a pressure on Turkey TRNC President Rauf Denktas said on Friday that the decision of the European Court of Human Rights (ECHR) about Ms. Loizidou was used as a means of putting pressure on Turkey. Speaking in a news conference, Denktas said that urging Turkey to pay compensation for a real estate which was not worth of 100,000 U.S. dollars and accepting this decision as a model for the future cases meant not wanting the solution of Cyprus issue. Noting that the issue of property in Cyprus was an issue that could be sorted out on negotiation table by the two sides politically, Denktas said that exchange of population was made in the past. Denktas said an agreement on the basis of bi-zonal structure was made in political aspect, adding Annan plan aimed to disturb that. Reminding 1977-1979 agreements concluded with Greek Cypriots which noted that in case of an agreement foreseeing bi-zonal status, Greek Cypriots' gaining properties would be within the laws of the North and the buffer zone would not be infringed, Denktas said that Loizidou infringed the buffer zone and violated the agreement. Denktas said that the fact that two sides had equal rights must be accepted, adding that Greek Cypriot leader Tassos Papadopoulos told Turkish Cypriots that "compensation would be paid after an agreement is made" for the Turkish properties usurped and demolished by Greek Cypriots. "If compensation for the losses of Turkish Cypriots is going to be paid after the agreement, then a Greek Cypriot woman's applying to ECHR against Turkey saying that she could not go to the place in the north by infringing the buffer zone, her winning the case and making this case an example for other cases is really shameful and it also impedes finding a solution to Cyprus issue. It is difficult to sort out Cyprus issue before sorting out the property issue. You will tell people who consider a building as their property and who make investment for 30 years to be migrants again. You will tell them there is no place for them to go and they have to take care of themselves on their own. This is not possible," Denktas said.
