WMF lists five historical sites in Turkey as endangered The World Monuments Fund (WMF) has included five historical sites in Turkey on its list of 100 Most Endangered Sites. The five sites considered by the WMF as being under threat are the Temple of Augustus in the centre of the Turkish capital Ankara; the Kariye Museum and Little Hagia Sophia Mosque (Kucuk Ayasofya Camii) in Istanbul, both of which were churches in the time of the Byzantine Empire; the central synagogue in Izmir; and the ancient city of Ephesus in western Turkey, one of the countryıs most visited and most famous tourist attractions. The WMF, a private, non-profit organisation, is dedicated to the preservation of historic artworks and architecture around the world. It carries out its mission to protect the worldıs heritage through fieldwork, advocacy, providing grants for restoration and preservation, and conducting education and training courses.
