Two New Cases of Torture in Detention

Two New Cases of Torture in Detention

The juvenile S. Tekin (16), who was detained on 26 November in Siirt,
announced that he was tortured in custody. He told the followings
concerning to the incident:

"While I was going home around 17.30 pm, a man following me put a bag
on my head and wanted me not to make a noise. He pushed me in the car
after tying my hands. He tied my feet in the car and then he fainted
me with a hard object that I guessed it was a gun. When I waked up, I
was still in the car with the bag on my head. I was hearing radio
voices. They stopped the car and took me out of it. They laid me on
the ground and put a gun on my head. They were saying that they would
kill me if I turn back. One of them stunt on my back and said: 'Where
is your brother, say immediately, we will find and kill him'. I came
round in Sehmuse graveyard but I couldn't control my hands and legs".

His father Emin Tekin announced that they were pressured on the
grounds that they were the members of HRA and DEHAP. Tekin added that
the police have observed their house for one year.

In Dörtyol district of Hatay, Idris Gengeç and Halil Sahin, who were
detained on 15 October on the allegation that "they brought food to
KHK militants", were reportedly tortured.

Leyla Gengeç stated the followings: "I went to Dörtyol Prison last
week for visitings. Idris couldn't stand afoot. He came by the help of
his friends. He sat on a chair. He told that his ribs were broken, he
had difficulty in breathing and he has a risk of having internal
bleeding. Although the physician in the prison stated that he had to
be sent to a health center outside, he is not sent. My son said that
the commander who tortured him broke his ribs."

Gengeç's lawyer Mehmet Sahin announced that they appealed on 21
November to the prosecutor in Dörtyol Prison for the treatment of his
client. He stated the followings:

"I went to the prison on 21 November to visit Idris Gengeç. They were
both bad. Particularly Idris couldn't stand and walk. His ribs were
broken and he had the risk of having an inner bleeding. Halil couldn't
hear anything. We appealed to the prosecutor with a petition for
sending them to a health center. Prosecutor accepted our demand but
the prison officials don't take him to a doctor on the allegation that
there isn't soldier". (Özgür Gündem-TIHV, December 1, 2003)
