Some were in fact pretty close to what we call libertarians. Not all believed
in slavery. Slavery was allowed in order to get the southern states to ratify
the constitution. That was one of the issues that would have split the
country then had the anti-slavery contingent not been willing to compromise.
That issue eventually was tied into many other issues that almost split the
country in the Civil War.
