美国国防部长拉姆斯菲尔德荣获"驴唇不对马嘴奖"

在一次新闻发布会上的一番高论，使他荣获英国简明英语组织颁发的本年
度"驴唇不对马嘴奖"。
                  2002年2月，拉姆斯菲尔德在北约国防部长会议新闻发
布会上发表的那番"知道不知道"的言论，听起来模棱两可，读起来如同绕
口令。

                  拉姆斯菲尔德讲话原文:
                  "就我们所知，有些事情早已是众所周知的。有些事情
我们知道自己知道。我们也知道，有些事情早已是已知的未知，这也就是
说，我们现在知道了，有些事情我们其实并不知道。但也有一些事情是未
知的未知----这些事，我们并不知道自己不知道。"


                  反复读了几遍之后，还是有很多人不知道自己知道还
是不知道拉姆斯菲尔德到底是在说什么。

                  你知道吗？

                  英国的简明英语组织每年一度，向该年度公众人物所
作的最佳"胡说八道"颁发所谓的"驴唇不对马嘴奖"。

                  简明英语组织的宗旨是要确保向大众提供的信息使用
简洁、易懂的语言。该组织的发言人说，拉姆斯菲尔德式的语言正是他们
力争取缔的。

                  这位发言人诙谐地告诉路透社，"我们觉得自己知道他
在说什么，但我们不知道是否真的知道他在说什么。"

                  “自杀后的后悔”

                  据报道，拉姆斯菲尔德还遇到了来自加利福尼亚当选
州长施瓦辛格的激烈竞争。施瓦辛格在被问及对同性婚姻的看法时回答
说， "我认为，同性婚姻是当事男女自己的事"。

                  欧盟外交专员彭定康也不示弱，嘲讽"保守党自杀之后
又后悔了"的言论也使他险些获奖。

                  当然，最后他们都败在了国防部长的手下。在美国，
有人将拉姆斯菲尔德言论的只言片语收录成了一本诗集，名为《智慧拾
零----拉姆斯菲尔德的存在主义诗集》。

                  据说该书面世后曾到了"拉氏迷"的喝彩和好评。

                  The United States Defence Secretary, Donald
Rumsfeld, has baffled journalists in Brussels by explaining the
greatest threat to Western civilisation may lurk in what he has
termed "unknown unknowns".

                  Mr Rumsfeld says he told a meeting of North
Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) defence ministers that even
US intelligence agencies can often only see the tip of the
iceberg when looking for terrorist threats.

                  But this is how he explained it at a media
conference.

                  "There are no knowns," Mr Rumsfeld.

                  "There are things we know that we know. There
are known unknowns - that is to say, there are things that we now
know we don't know but there are also unknown unknowns. There are
things we do not know we don't know," Mr Rumsfeld said.

                  "So when we do the best we can and we pull all
this information together, and we then say well that's basically
what we see as the situation, that is really only the known
knowns and the known unknowns.

                  "And each year we discover a few more of those
unknown unknowns."

                  One more time now:

                  "There are things we know that we know," said
U.S. Defense Secretary Rumsfeld. "There are known unknowns - that
is to say, there are things that we now know we don't know but
there are also unknown unknowns. There are things we do not know
we don't know."
