"Gott mitt uns", but was it on their belts?  In any case, yes, in "The 
Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" William Shirer pointed out, as I 
recall, that a huge component of Nazism was the idea of the Master Race 
as not only White but Christian (as opposed to Jewish, see, or Gypsy, or 
those Russians with their Eastern Orthodox oddity). There was also a 
strong undercurrent of harking back longingly to the "healthy"savagery 
of a sort of primeval paganism of the ancient central European forest.  
When German nationals tried to behave like true Christians (eg Dietrich 
Bonhoeffer, sp.), they got thrown into the concentration camps like 
everybody else who crossed the bullies in charge.
