Then why is it that lesbians are the least likely group to get AIDS?
That was always a good come-back to the homophobes. The fact is that lesbians were not ignored in the safe-sex campaigns either; there was mention of dental dams, the problem of open cuts on fingers and in the mouth, and the equal opportunity dangers of S/M. (Have you ever tasted a dental dam? Bleech....)
HIV is typically spread by virus-laden semen entering through mucous membrane tears. In the vast majority of cases this occurs during anal sex among homosexual males. Women can contract HIV the same way, but are a "dead-end" for obvious reasons. They can be given the virus, and on rare occasions it can turn up in tiny amounts in vaginal swabs, saliva, and corneal impressions, but as non-semen producers women are non-vectors. It's an extremely poor etiological come-back, Karen.
Swamp, this was the early 1980's. Nobody was sure how contagious HIV was through vaginal secretions. The point is that Lesbians were also concerned, and targeted for safe-sex information, such as it was then. Plus, there was the issue of blood in S/M.
