HIV is typically spread by virus-laden semen entering through mucous
membrane tears. In the vast majority of cases this occurs during anal
sex among homosexual males. Women can contract HIV the same way, but
are a "dead-end" for obvious reasons. They can be given the virus, and
on rare occasions it can turn up in tiny amounts in vaginal swabs,
saliva, and corneal impressions, but as non-semen producers women are
non-vectors. It's an extremely poor etiological come-back, Karen.
