There are some pretty conservative areas in California, too. Check out the map below from the recall election. You can click on each county and see how the voting broke down. In Orange County (adjacent to Los Angeles County), Arnold got 64% of the vote and McClintock (the "real" conservative) got over 15%; that's almost 4 out of every 5 voters voting Republican. On the other hand, Arnold and McClintock only got a combined 36% in Alameda County (across the bay from SF).
