I live in beautiful Las Vegas, NV. The "Most livable city in America" is what this city is called. But, there is countless animals dying on a daily basis without hope or help. There is an animal shelter here called "Dewey Animal Shelter" that is letting cats and dogs be adopted without running certain tests before they leave. I adopted a cute little kitten on 11/18/2003 and had to lay her to rest 11/22/2003 only 4 days later because of complications from Panleukopenia (Kitty Parvo) The paperwork stated that she was 3 years old, when a local vet told me that she was less than 11 months old. She was way too young to fight the disease. She had no chance to live. Her white cells were less than 600 when they are supposed to be over 5000. I was informed by Dewey Animal shelter that they told me that ALL animals have a 10% chance of living after they are adopted. That's 10% chance of LIVING, not dying, but a 10% chance of LIVING. Basically, their motto is "Get 'em in, Get 'em out, Get paid" I know that this disease is containable, but they are not doing that. They are releasing the animals without hesitation. They make sure that the cat or dog is spayed or neutered, but not if it's infected. I know that they need to sanitize the building, as in: countertops, floors, etc. Common bleach will do the job just fine. Why don't they do that? I don't know. I am not looking for donations or handouts, I am looking for supporters. I love animals, I always have. Anyone out there that owns a cat or dog should understand my frustrations. If you look at it from your standpoint, if you lose your animal, animal control picks it up and transports it to a shelter, now what if that shelter was infested with parvo or another deadly disease that can be prevented? And your animal dies. How would you feel? I would like some sort of direction in what I can do. ANY ideas, commments or suggestions would be welcome. I have contacted the Mayor and a local news station to get this public. Please help. Andrew Smith Las Vegas, NV
