Laura Ingraham's Clinton Church Bible

Laura Ingraham's Clinton Church Bible

Chris Matthews had a superb "Harvard Hardball" interview of Dr. Howard Dean,
Democratic candidate for President of the United States during his Tuesday,
December 2nd Hardball Program. Matthew's panel of distinguished guests were
quite interesting to view and hear their comments, too. Chris Matthews
raised the issue of political pandering to the Religious Right in this
country.

Conservative Radio Talk Entertainer Laura Ingraham's comment on Bill
Clinton's Church Bible was quite amusing. Matthew's asked Ingraham whether
public displays of religious piety by publicly elected officials was an
appropriate thing to do. Laura Ingraham said an emphatic "yes." She brought
up President Bill Clinton as a shining example of an appropriate appearance
of piety for "NASCAR Dads" zooming the news cameras in on Bill Clinton, when
he was President, while carrying his Bible into Southern Baptist Churches on
Sundays. Howard Fineman was even taken back by Ingraham's flippant and glib
comment. Fineman appeared as if he was trying to contain himself from
breaking out into uncontrolled laughter. I was on the floor laughing.

I must say, however, that Laura Ingraham had the best line yet, that openly
displays of piety is what religous folks, particularly Southern Christians
want to see in their politicians. In fact, she recommended that politicians
should be uttering religious statements and displaying Christian symbols
every chance they have available in front of the news media and particularly
their cameras. At that point, I was in need of oxygen, and dying of
laughter. In my view, the grotesquely and shameful display of public piety
is hypocrisy.

So, is this what the Republican Party is trying to promote in the candidacy
of George W. Bush, according to Laura Ingraham?
