I think that the purpose of humanism is to enable communication with 
others on social issues with a minimal set of beliefs (in science and 
reason). I don't think anybody invented humanists for a purpose.

Many have difficulty coping with life without some sort of spiritual 
support.

Humanists aren't created because there is a need for them. People become 
humanists because they want to communicate with others.
