Are you familiar with Project Censored? (http://www.projectcensored.org/)?
It is an on-going group at Sonoma State University (part of the Califorina
State University system) that publishes an annual "top 20 censored news
stories." They have a section in the annual called "news abuse", which
gives the ten leading instances of overcovered news.

The Jackson arrest most certainly counts as news abuse; its prominance
means that CNN and Fox don't have to give so much coverage to the deaths
in Afghanistan, the "end of major conflict" in Iraq, the much opposed
Medicare prescription plan, the skyrocketing incidents of gay-bashing and
other hate crimes as a result of Gene Robinson's consecration and the
Massachussetts ruling, or any thing else that might be considered
meaningful information.
