You know, it's a strange coincidence, but I've noticed a very bigh 
correlation of anti evolutionists and religious fundamentalists---about 
100%. It's almost as if, using your words, they are "a community that 
basically shares a common ideology, that goes beyond the arena of 
scientific understanding...." In short, their opinions would appear to 
be religious prejudices which ignore or are ignorant of relevant facts.
