Having just had a knockdown dragout battle with my car's air conditioner
compressor (I won, but barely) I'm going to beg off for the moment on
looking for cites, but I do want to point out that the timing is actually
irrelevant. If the amount of money it cost to get Teri to the point where
the majority of doctors said quit picking at her, it isn't going to help,
was expected to be X, then X would be the award, whether the therapy had
already been done, was still to be done, or never got done. If in the time
between her heart attack or whatever, and the award, Micheal Schiavo spent a
bunch or a little, X doesn't change. If the timing was such that the
decision to go strictly to maintainence was made toward the end of the
trial, he might very well have in all good faith said the money would be
used for therapy, some of which would be paying for past therapy, and then
gone with medical advice and quit fussing at her.
