Big Chill Blasts Into New England

POSTED: 7:26 a.m. EST December 2, 2003
UPDATED: 8:24 a.m. EST December 2, 2003

Today is the first day of meteorological winter which runs from Dec 1
through Feb 28 and it will feel like mid-winter through mid-week.

The arrival of some very cold air into the region today is producing snow
showers. These snow showers in some areas are coating the untreated road
surfaces. Extra caution is advised. In addition today will be another
blustery day. The wind will make it feel even colder than it will be.

In addition visibility can drop suddenly to below 1 mile.

Exercise extra caution this morning driving and be alert to the possibility
of slippery conditions.

At 7 a.m. a line of snow showers stretched from Gloucester to Quincy and
Milton. The snow showers will be scattered around the area through the
morning hours.

In Massachusetts, troopers said they have responded to more than 50
accidents on Interstate 91 and Interstate 291 between the Connecticut line
and Holyoke since 5 a.m. Officers said several of the crashes involved
jackknifed tractor-trailer trucks.

A large area of high pressure will slowly move across the central United
States with a cool but dry air mass in place Wednesday through at least
early Friday.

The forecast calls for another storm to move out of the midwest and off the
mid Atlantic coast moving south of New England this weekend.

Complicating this forecast will be a large cold high pressure center
building into the Great Lakes. The final outcome of the battle between this
cold high to the north and a low to our south will determine our weather
this weekend and into next week.
