I'm skeptical about the accuracy of this as a generalization. From
what I've seen, on (Chinese) New Years eve, people go out to buy red
flowers and food items for a family feast at home. The younger set
hangs out and socializes in barber shops, not US-style "bars."
Perhaps the customs are different where Joyce Wong lives.
