India lauds Russia's backing

Moscow, Nov. 13 - The Prime Minister, Atal Bihari
Vajpayee, said today that India appreciated Russia's
"consistent and strong support" to New Delhi's campaign
against terrorism that was inspired by religious
extremism. 

Addressing the Russian Academy of Sciences, before his
summit meeting with the Russian President, Vladimir
Putin, Mr. Vajpayee said terrorism was rapidly spreading
its tentacles, posing a threat to the entire civilised
world. 

"Specifically, it is threatening the unity, territorial
integrity and sovereignty of both India and Russia," the
Prime Minister stressed. 

"President Putin minced no words in his address to the
Indian Parliament three years ago, when he said the same
individuals, the same terrorist and extremist
organizations are involved in terrorist acts from the
Philippines to Kosovo, including in Kashmir, Afghanistan
and Chechnya," he stated. 

Pointing out that India and Russia were both multi
ethnic, pluralistic, democratic countries, Vajpayee said
that intellectuals, scientists and all public figures had
an important role in the fight against the forces of
intolerance and violence. 

"Our two countries have established a strong legal basis
and a useful institutional mechanism for cooperation in
the struggle against international terrorism," the Prime
Minister added.
