It's quite well-known they were Christian...alongside the fact that
Christians are well-represented among Bethlehem's Palestinian
population. The very events surrounding the said incident at the
Church of the Nativity inspired articles on the subject at the time,
at least several of which highlight the fact that about 40% of the
Palestinian fighters in the territories are Palestinian Christians.
Probably around 70 - 90% percent in Bethlehem alone, where there
happens to be a substantial Christian population.
