My jeweler said that about 5% of people develop a sensitivity to the nickel in the white gold alloy. In my case, it was a white gold pair of earrings that set it off. I wore them for several weeks without removing them, and that seems to have precipitated the allergy. Now that I have the sensitivity, wearing white gold for more than a few hours causes my skin touching the white gold to start to weep and peel off.
