Re: New York's TAP loans and HESC, need info.

TAP is the New York State Tuition Assistance Program that gives need-based grants (not loans) for NY residents that are full-time students. Not being in New York, I don't know what it takes to qualify or how much one can receive. Your guidance office should be able to tell you.

HESC is the New York State Higher Education Services Corporation, a state agency that makes federal Stafford loans. Every state has one. Depending on your need, the Stafford loans are either subsidized (interest free while in school plus 6 months) or unsubsidized (interest accrues).

HESC also makes PLUS loans. These are loans to parents and are not subsidized.

Could someone please explain these? Their website is kind of vague and
doesn't really go into detail. And how do they compare to "subsidized
loans" ? Thanks. www.hesc.com
