My father was a Princeton alum and interviewed for years, I don't think they count for much. Dad used to complain that all the people he liked were turned down and the ones he didn't care for got accepted. And I suspect that was true - Dad wanted kids who were like the clubby Princeton he knew in the 30's, and Princeton wants a modern, diverse university. I think there are basically 2 reasons for the alumni interview: first, they are embarrassed to be charging enormous sums and offering a 'personal' experience and yet making all their decisions from a file folder. This is a sop. The other is that it gives alumni something to do. My son's reaction to his alumni interviewer was so negative that he withdrew his application. So sometimes it does more harm than good. (He was right. Princeton was the wrong place for him.)
