I could use some career advice! Throughout college I've never really had a firm idea of what I'd like to do for a career, but only a vague idea that I'd like to go into research (academia or industry, I don't know). I'm 22 and about 1-1.5 years away from getting my B.S. in Information Systems (a hybrid of CS and business). I'm also going to graduate with a minor in psychology. For the past year, I've been working as an undergrad statistical consultant/researcher for an alcohol/drug abuse reduction outfit here on campus. Lately, I've seen people who graduated as long as two years ago with degrees in CS or information systems still unable to find jobs after all this time. I haven't particularly enjoyed the Information Systems program, and it seems that jobs for grads are nonexistent, at least for the time being. I've been encouraged by a couple of professors to get an additional minor in applied statistics, based on doing well in their classes and enjoying my undergrad research job. This would mean delaying graduation by at least a semester, and probably two. I'm tempted to get the extra minor, and then try to go on and get a M.S. in stats. The main problems are- 1. I'm too far into my college career to change my major to anything other than information systems, but that field seems to be a dead end that I don't really enjoy anyway. 2. I don't know if I'd be able to get into grad school to get a stats M.S. with only a minor as an undergrad. Even though most schools I've looked at say that they require a B.S. in stats, would I be able to get in based on the undergrad research work I've done plus having the minor in applied stats? 3. I don't know if getting a M.S. in stats would be worth it in the long run. Does it open up a lot of career possibilities? Would a Ph. D be necessary for career or academic positions? I would really appreciate any advice!
