The exclusion principle as presented in Phys. Rev. 58, 716(1940) is not
an easy read. There was an Am J Phys sponsored competition some years
ago to come up with a simpler explanation. See Ian Duck "Pauli and the
Spin-Statistics Theorem," World Scientific (1998) for the details. The
ultimate justification for the exclusion principle is that it's in
accord with the Periodic Table of the Elements.
