Americans certainly will stretch credulity to preserve the "we are the
envy of the world" belief, which they have been told their whole
lives.  So if someone is anti-US it must be due to jealousy.

Perhaps just as experiment, briefly entertain the notion that the
sensuality and materialism of the US is deeply offensive and
threatening to some, to the degree they will die to keep it away.
