I know of no precedences of people enjoying great (and unearned) 
wealth growing despondent recognizing that the sources of this wealth 
will dry up in couple generations.  Couple years, perhaps, couple 
months, for sure, but not 50 years.

You don't think that people may be willing to kill and die for 
religious beliefs (or any ideology, for that matter)?  Unlike the 
above, there are lots of precedences for this one.
